By late July, most photoperiod outdoor and light-dep crops are somewhere between two and five weeks into flower, and I'm seeing the same mistake on farm after farm: the fertigation program hasn't changed since June. Same nitrogen-heavy mix that built vegetative structure is still running through the drip lines, and the plants are telling you about it with dark, overly lush canopy and buds that are stacking slower than they should. Nitrogen timing during the flower transition is one of the highest-leverage decisions left in the season, and it's also one of the most commonly ignored.

Why the Veg Mix Becomes a Liability in Flower

Nitrogen drives vegetative growth — leaf and stem production, chlorophyll, canopy expansion. That's exactly what you want through veg and the first one to two weeks of flower while the plant is still stretching. Past that point, excess nitrogen actively competes with the plant's reproductive priorities. You get continued leaf and internode growth at the expense of cannabinoid and terpene production, softer bud structure with more airy internal growth, and — critically for outdoor and light-dep operations — denser canopy that traps humidity right when you need airflow most to keep botrytis and powdery mildew off your flowers. I've walked fields in early August where you could tell exactly which blocks never got their nitrogen cut, just from bud density and leaf color, before pulling a single lab result.

The Transition Isn't a Light Switch, It's a Ramp

Don't cut nitrogen to zero the day you confirm flower initiation. Ease it down over 10 to 14 days while ramping phosphorus and potassium up to support flower development. A rough target by week three of flower is getting your N ratio down to roughly a third of your peak veg feed, with P and K carrying more of the total nutrient load. If you're running synthetic bloom formulations, this is usually just a product switch on your injector. If you're running organic or living soil systems, it means backing off high-nitrogen amendments and leaning into bloom-phase inputs like bat guano, kelp, and phosphorus-rich rock minerals earlier in the cycle, since organic nutrient release is slower and you need to plan the transition further ahead of when you want the effect to show up.

Read the Plant, Not Just the Calendar

Photoperiod triggers and calendar dates get you in the right window, but the plant tells you when it's actually ready. Watch for the stretch to slow and node spacing to tighten — that's your signal the plant has shifted into reproductive mode and is ready for the nutrient switch. Pulling nitrogen too early, before the plant has finished its structural growth, will stunt canopy development and cost you yield potential you can't get back. Pulling it too late costs you bud density and creates the humidity and airflow problems I mentioned above. Most operators I work with are erring late, not early — inertia keeps the veg mix running longer than it should.

Tissue and Runoff Testing Beats Guessing

If you're running any scale of operation, a leaf tissue test at the start of flower and again three weeks in will tell you where you actually stand versus where you think you stand. Runoff EC and pH checks on your drip lines are cheap and fast, and they catch problems — salt buildup, pH lockout of phosphorus, potassium deficiency — before they show up as visible deficiency symptoms two weeks later. I'd rather see a farm run monthly tissue tests on a handful of representative blocks than rely entirely on visual assessment, especially on larger acreage where canopy variability across the field can mask problems in your best-looking rows.

Don't Forget Cal-Mag as You Cut Synthetic Nitrogen

A lot of nitrogen sources in synthetic programs are calcium nitrate, so when you cut the N-heavy feed you can inadvertently starve calcium and magnesium at exactly the point flower development needs them most for cell wall strength and enzyme function. Make sure your bloom formulation or your organic input plan accounts for cal-mag independently rather than assuming it rides along with whatever nitrogen source you were using in veg.

Get this transition right over the next two to three weeks and you set up the density, resin production, and disease resistance that carry a crop through to harvest. Get it wrong and you're fighting mold pressure and light bud weight in September while wondering what happened.
