Of every dosage form I've helped bring through commercial manufacturing, tinctures get the least respect. Everyone treats them as the entry-level product — dilute distillate in an oil, drop it in a bottle, done. That attitude is exactly why so many tincture brands end up with stability failures, dosing inconsistency, or a product that separates in the bottle within three months of hitting shelves. A tincture is a simple format executed at a level of precision most operators don't bring to it. Here's where it actually goes wrong.

Carrier Oil Selection Isn't a Branding Decision

MCT oil, hemp seed oil, olive oil, grapeseed — I see brands pick a carrier based on what sounds cleanest on the label, without accounting for how that oil actually performs with cannabinoids over an 18- to 24-month shelf life. MCT (medium-chain triglyceride) oil is the industry default for good reason: it has a favorable viscosity for accurate dropper dosing, better cannabinoid solubility than most alternatives, a neutral flavor profile that doesn't fight your terpene formulation, and strong oxidative stability. Hemp seed oil markets well but carries its own polyunsaturated fat profile that's more prone to oxidation and rancidity over time, which shortens your real shelf life even if your label claims otherwise. If you're choosing a carrier oil for marketing reasons without running real stability data against it, you're guessing at a shelf life you haven't actually earned.

Cannabinoid Solubility Limits Are a Formulation Ceiling, Not a Suggestion

Distillate and isolate have real solubility limits in any given carrier oil, and pushing past that limit to hit an aggressive dose-per-milliliter marketing claim gets you a supersaturated solution that looks fine on day one and starts crashing out of solution — visible crystallization or oiling-off — within weeks. I've seen high-potency tincture lines launch at 3000mg per bottle because the number looked good on a shelf-talker, without anyone checking whether that concentration was actually stable in the chosen carrier at room temperature over the product's claimed shelf life. Run real solubility studies before you commit to a potency tier, not after your first customer complaint about sediment in the bottle.

Dropper Accuracy Is Where Dose Uniformity Actually Breaks

Most tincture recalls and COA discrepancies I've seen don't trace back to the manufacturing batch — they trace back to the dropper. Standard glass droppers have real variance in delivered volume depending on fill technique, viscosity of the oil, and even how the consumer holds the bottle. A dropper calibrated against water will deliver a different volume against a viscous MCT-based tincture. If your label claims 25mg per full dropper, you need to have actually measured delivered volume with your specific oil viscosity and your specific dropper spec, not the generic spec sheet the packaging vendor gave you. This is a five-minute verification step that gets skipped constantly.

Homogeneity Before Bottling Is Non-Negotiable

Cannabinoids don't distribute themselves evenly through a carrier oil just because you stirred it. Batch tanks need proper mixing time and, ideally, in-process sampling from multiple points in the tank — top, middle, bottom — before you release to bottling. I've seen batches test compliant from a single top-of-tank sample and then come back with 20%+ potency variance bottle-to-bottle because the bottom of the tank never fully incorporated. For any batch above a few hundred units, pull and test from at least three tank depths before you sign off.

Light and Oxygen Are the Enemy Over Shelf Life, Not Just at Launch

Cannabinoids degrade with UV exposure and oxidation over time — THC converts to CBN, and terpenes volatilize and degrade, changing both potency and flavor profile well before the product looks obviously "off." Amber or cobalt glass isn't a design choice, it's a stability requirement. And if your bottling line isn't purging headspace with nitrogen before capping, you're bottling in oxygen that actively works against every stability number on your COA from day one.

The fix across all of this is the same one that applies to every dosage form I've written about: treat a tincture like a formulated product with real stability and dose-uniformity requirements, not a candle-making project. Run actual accelerated stability studies against your specific carrier oil, concentration, and packaging before you commit to a shelf-life claim. Verify dropper delivery against your real formulation, not a generic spec. It's not a complicated fix. It's just a fix nobody applies until after the first bad COA.
